The steak is overcooked and it tastes burnt. 例子中，"he looks big" 和 "it tastes burnt" 中动词后面都接上形容词而不是副词，因为 big 和 burnt 分别修饰的对象是主语（代名词）"he" 和 "it"，而不是 "looks" 和 "tastes" 的动作。 同理，在 "came home happy" 一句，happy 也是修饰 Tom 这个人。当然，"came home happily" 也是对的，但意思跟 "came home happy" 不一样，前者说的是回家的过程，而后者说的是回家后 Tom 的感觉。 Have you any questions about English usage?
