上次我们讨论 Eric 提出的句子，其中一部分是这样的："... the Diaoyu Islands question be shelved in their talks..." 。句中的 "shelved" 一字本来解作放到架上的意思，用在开会讨论的时候，意思变成是搁置，也就是放在一边，容后再谈。
与 shelve 相反的是 table，前者是放到架上，暂时不谈；后者是放在桌上，要马上商议，翻开 Oxford English Dictionary "table" 的条目，其中一说是 "to present or submit formally for discussion or consideration"，解释得最清楚不过。
然而有趣的是，在这条下面另有小字说 "common in English-speaking regions outside the United States （通用于英语区域，美国除外）"。那么美国又如何使用 table 这个字呢？
继续看下去，就会看到 table 还有一个意思，和以上所说的刚刚相反：to postpone consideration of something (especially indefinitely)，而且还标明「源自美国，主要在该国使用」。美国的 table 和 shelve 是同一个意思。
人家常说英式英语和美式英语的分别，但同一个字意思完全相反，这样的例子并不多见。
